For decades, BIM and GIS have handled different parts of the built environment. Building data stayed in CAD and BIM systems, while geographic data stayed in GIS. Connecting the two has remained difficult, even as organizations increasingly need both. This webinar looks at how that separation developed and where the industry stands today. Juan B. Plaza draws on his work with Autodesk, Trimble, GIS, and photogrammetry to examine the history of BIM and why CAD and GIS will need to work together more closely.
What You'll Learn
- Why Autodesk introduced BIM and how the concept developed.
- How early teams tried to connect GIS with CAD.
- Where those early integration efforts ran into problems.
- Why BIM and GIS now need to work together.
- What a connected CAD and GIS future could mean for digital twins.
Who Should Watch
Juan B. Plaza has worked across GIS, CAD, geospatial technology, and photogrammetry for more than three decades. He was part of the team that created AutoCAD Map at Autodesk in the late 1990s. He later worked on Autodesk’s Enterprise GIS strategy until 2008.
Juan also spent 11 years managing Latin American sales for Autodesk and five years as Director of Sales for Trimble Navigation’s geospatial division. He now serves as CEO of Plaza Aerospace, an aviation consulting firm based in Boca Raton, Florida.
